Scar tissue can sound like a scary word, but is simply collagen fiber that is laid down as part of the normal healing process of any type of damaged tissue. Normal tissue runs in a pattern that makes it functional, flexible, and strong. When normal tissue is damaged, whether by a skinned knee, a sprained ankle, a heart attack, or any other means, the body begins to lay down collagen to help protect the area and increase tensile strength.
Scar tissue formation is a normal part of healing. It can, however, become problematic when not treated properly because it has decreased strength, blood flow, and mobility. Manual techniques may help improve the functionality of the scar, particularly in the early phases of the healing process. Therapies such as chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release/massage and rehabilitative exercise to name a few can help improve blood flow and remodel the scar tissue to help prevent future pain and dysfunction in the tissue by improving strength and flexibility.
Here at Harlow Chiropractic, we can help with both old scar tissue and new scar tissue in the ligaments, tendons, and muscles. While scar tissue is normal and needed, improper care and rehabilitation is what causes the problems for which scar tissue is known.
