Pain is Common, Not Normal

The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as: “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.” What does that mean? Pain is the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. Our society has been so ingrained with the idea that pain is normal and just needs to be masked with different types of medication that we lose sight of the real problem, which is the underlying cause of pain.

Instead of trying to cover up the pain, we need to address the real problem. Listening to our bodies gives us a clue as to where pain is coming from. For example, burning or shooting pain may be indicative of nerve irritation whereas muscle spasms can signify an underlying ligament or joint dysfunction.

Chiropractic can not only help relieve pain, but it aims to fix the underlying cause of that pain. Subluxation, poor biomechanics, and postural imbalance are just a few of the problems that many other healthcare providers do not take into consideration.

The key point to remember is that even though our society has been taught that pain is just a normal part of getting older, that is not true. Pain is common, not normal. When the underlying cause of pain is treated instead of being masked, there can be a solution to the problem that is both short and long term.
